Buying eco-friendly or sustainable products unfortunately used to be considered a badge of dishonor by some lovers of luxury. Now that the true extent of the climate emergency has become apparent to more people, however, sustainable products are rightly having their heyday. High-end buyers no longer need to sacrifice style in favor of sustainability, and this is perhaps particularly true in the car market. Here are some new luxury cars which won’t destroy the planet.
Lamborghini
The sports car giant Automobili Lamborghini is currently working on its “concept car” Terzo Millennio (Third Millennium). As sleek- and powerful-looking as its predecessors from this extremely well-loved manufacturer, the Terzo Millennio will feature a high-performance electric engine and will be designed to store electricity not only in its rechargeable battery, but also in the CFK panels which are going to compose its body. The Terzo Millennio looks like an extremely exciting development which will be worth the long wait: the car is not expected to go on sale before 2025. In the meantime, however, Lamborghini are planning to make some of their existing gasoline models into hybrids.
Mercedes-Benz
Possibly because of their long history of making stylish but more affordable cars for the average user as well as high-end luxury cars, Mercedes-Benz are ahead of the curve compared to many other luxury car manufacturers, and have already brought out an all-electric model, the EQB. This is a bigger car—it can accommodate up to seven seats—so it obviously doesn’t look the sleekest, but that doesn’t mean it’s not stylish. The interiors look spacious and luxurious, the doors close with a simple gesture, and the optional extras include a sliding sunroof. If you have been wanting to buy Mercedes-Benz this could be a great time to do it—perhaps by selling your existing gasoline car and replacing it with this or another electric model.
Maserati
Maserati have been taunting sports car enthusiasts with their sparse and contradictory announcements about the new Maserati GranTurismo. The car completed production in 2019, and is expected to go on sale in the US sometime in 2023. According to the manufacturer’s website the GranTurismo will be offered in an all-electric option, while car experts have speculated that a hybrid and/or a gasoline-only model might also be in the works. Spy shots of the GranTurismo look fantastic, and the unique exterior paint—which features a graphic reinterpretation of the Maserati logo—is sure to turn heads.
Ferrari
Another Italian luxury car giant, Ferrari is following the electric trend, with its new all-electric model scheduled to be released in 2025. In the meantime, the company has produced an impressive-looking hybrid, the SF90 Stradale. While the name of this model hints at this being a road car rather than a race car, in typical Ferrari style this is one of the sleekest road cars out there. To achieve maximum performance, this model relies on a complex engine system involving a V8 turbo engine and three electric motors, making it a truly impressive hybrid car.
